James Tate

May 4, 1946 — December 6, 2023

James Louis Tate, 77, of Hickory, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2023, leaving behind a trail of laughter and cherished memories. Born on May 4, 1946, in Houston, Texas, Jim lived a life full of humor, hard work, and resilience.

In the game of life, Jim had a winning hand. He had an MBA up his sleeve and served as a bank examiner, always making sure no funny business was happening in the banking industry. With his sharp eye for detail and unwavering commitment to honesty, he ensured that the financial world was playing by the rules.

When it came to hobbies, Jim was a true aficionado. He had wizard-like abilities with computers. He would dive into the depths of the internet, and had been exploring the digital realm since the late 1970s.

With a quick wit and a mischievous smile, Jim enjoyed cracking jokes and making people laugh. He had a knack for poker and loved testing his skills at the table. In his later years he would often email his daughter Beth with the results of the most recent game. It usually described how he “cleaned people out” or “won big.”

His love for Mexican food was unparalleled. He would frequently ask people what they were having for dinner and if they had no answer, he would “suggest” Mexican food and margaritas.

He was a loving husband to Mary, a caring father to his daughter Beth, and a proud grandfather to Erin and Katy. Jim is also survived by his brother Michael. He was preceded in death by his parents.

As we bid farewell to our beloved Jim, let us remember him as the jester who brought joy to our lives. In his memory, let us continue to embrace the playful side of life, sharing laughter and creating memories that will endure for generations to come.
